He just won the league, doesn’t mean he won the championship. Just like Tobias won the league but didn’t win against Cynthia. Ash was a special case in Alola, because there was no champion. Just the friendly match against Kukui which was considered something close to a champion.

The fact that the guy's face wasn't shown just showcases how passionless the writers were about writing the league arc. From sacrificing chunks of the battles in favor of filler to team rocket ruining every important moment including the Moltres flame and the Ritchie battle to having Ash lose in an unfair and unrealistic way by having Squirtle lose to sleep powder, Ash seemingly not having a sixth pokemon with him, and Charizard just being lazy and disorient. The writers really didn't seem to care about this league.

If he had the Dragonite he has now in Kanto he'd be champion much much sooner. Better late than never though!

I think the simple reason is that from a narrative perspective, Greninja is too centralising. Leaving Greninja at Oak's Lab would never work because in XY, it was just a 'fix all problems' button. It's also a Pokemon that could never be brought back as a team player, because it was set up as the final pokemon to use every time. If they had wanted to bring back Ash's old Pokemon, Greninja makes things too complicated to write

Yeah, it's really so happy moment for everyone that ash caught kanto region's pseudo legend pokemon after very long period of time. But it would be better if he caught dragonite as dratini in its first form and evolve it by himself. So that we get to see dratini's evolution on screen. Also same about gengar that his evolution from ghastly to gengar didn't got to see on screen. But, pokemon company shows those evolution by a mysterious episode where Dialga and palkia were fought and piplup got kidnapped by different universe dawn. Also pikachu's evolution from pichu also got to see in that episode.
